Monday, March 25

9:00-10:30am: Increasing Your Awareness of Strengths to Accomplish Your Research & Career Goals
Individuals can achieve the same result but the way in which they accomplish those outcomes will differ. By increasing your awareness of your individual strengths, you gain insight into how you naturally succeed and how you can leverage those inherent abilities toward accomplishing your future goals. Presented by Nisha Cavanaugh, Manager of Postdoctoral & Academic Programs at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute. Space is limited to the first 50 who have registered for this event.

11am-12pm: Leveraging LinkedIn
Come learn how to make the perfect profile, find important contacts, and land a job using LinkedIn. Presented by May Kearney, Career Center Graduate Career Peer Educator.

12-1:30pm: LinkedIn Lab and Professional Photos
This workshop will provide dedicated time for graduate students to work on and receive feedback on their LinkedIn pages. You may also sign up to receive a free professional headshot to use on your LinkedIn page; please check back in the coming weeks for more information on how to do so. 2:00-3:00pm: Job Search Perseverance: How to Maintain Perspective When You’re on the Job Hunt
The job search can be a grueling process. This workshop will provide practical tips for maintaining resilience while you’re figuring out your next career move, and persevering through stumbling blocks while on the job hunt. Presented by Tamara Schaps, Assistant Dean, Graduate Strategic Initiatives.

Tuesday, March 26

9:00-10:00am: Writing and Tailoring Your Resume
Learn the nuts and bolts of writing a resume and how to write and tailor it so that it gets you to the interview.

10:30am-12:30pm: Writing an Effective Cover Letter
Find out why a cover letter is an essential part of a successful job application and how to write one that effectively conveys your strengths. This workshop will include time for drafting your cover letter. Presented by Erica Bender, Associate Director of The Writing Hub.

1:00-2:30pm: Resume and Cover Letter Lab
Get feedback on your resume and/or cover letter from a career coach. Please bring a copy of your materials. As you’re drafting them, make sure to review resume tips and a template as well as cover letter tips

Wednesday, March 27

9:00-10:00am: Preparing for the Non-Academic Interview, Part 1
Stephanie Georgio, a recruiter from Western Digital, will give a presentation on effective techniques and strategies that will allow you to create a meaningful and comfortable dialogue during the interview.

10:30am-12pm: Preparing for the Non-Academic Interview, Part 2: Mock Interviews
Observe a mock interview with hiring manager Christopher Dillon, PhD (Senior Scientist, Pfizer Oncology) interviewing candidates and providing feedback on the interviews. You will have the chance to ask probing questions to figure out how you can adopt helpful strategies and avoid interviewing pitfalls.

1:00-2:30pm: How to Build Your Personal Brand and Thrive in Your Career
What happens after you land the job? Shana Love, a university recruiter at the California State Auditor’s office, will draw from her extensive experience in building a successful career and mentoring others to provide tips on how to thrive, create opportunities for moving up on the career ladder, and maintain motivation during the inevitable ups and downs of your career path.

 3:00-4:00pm: Negotiating A Better Offer
Get a “behind the scenes” look at how employers determine their initial compensation offers, and in turn how to effectively ask for more. This workshop will also include discussion on how to identify those aspects of the job offer that are most important to you personally to negotiate, as well as how to negotiate in a manner that minimizes the risks of offending those on the other side. Presented by Jezmarie Cody, Talent Acquisition Consultant at Kaiser Permanente.

Triton Treks

Two Triton Treks will be held exclusively for UCSD graduate students and postdoctoral scholars to visit participating employers' offices, network with employers looking to recruit those with advanced degrees, and get an inside look at what it's like to work in their industries of interest. Space is limited to 20 participants! Please note that participation will be on a first-come, first-served basis; registering does not guarantee you a spot. Those who have been selected to participate will receive a confirmation email with information about attending the event by Monday, March 25. Transportation and food will be provided at each Trek.
